The Rensselaer Public Library has been in the city since before the city was founded (as the Bath-on-Hudson Library). The Rensselaer Library received its absolute charter in 1904 and has been in a few locations including school #2 and Broadway. In 2009 the library moved to its current location on East street, across from the Amtrak station, in a newly renovated building. The library provides public access computers, programs for children and adults, materials on loan, inter-library loan through the Upper Hudson Library system, and meeting rooms for groups, tutors and classes. Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County, U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants, and Living Resources use the library's space for classes. Every summer the library has a Summer Reading Program following the NY state collaborative theme, that encourages children and teens to read during the summer.
