CITY OF RENSSELAER RECEIVES MORE THAN $120,000 FROM RESTORE GRANT TO ASSIST SENIOR CITIZEN-OWNED HOME REPAIRS

Funding will support “rapid response” effort to assist elderly home owners

RENSSELAER, N.Y. (July 11, 2019) – The City of Rensselaer has been awarded $122,000 from the New York State Office of Homes and Community Renewal (HCR) as part of a RESTORE grant to assist home repairs for the elderly.

The Residential Emergency Services to Offer (Home) Repairs to the Elderly (RESTORE) program provides financial resources to assist senior citizen homeowners with the cost of addressing emergencies and code violations that pose a threat to their health and safety or affect the livability of their home. Assistance for the cost of these critical repairs will enable seniors to continue to live independently in their homes.

“Thanks to HCR and its RESTORE program, the City of Rensselaer is in a better position to assist with home repairs for the elderly, bringing properties up to code and preventing emergencies, if not tragedies, for our elderly home owners,” said Mayor Richard J. Mooney.

Eligible participants are individuals that meet the criteria below:

·         The individual (homeowner) owns and occupies the residential unit receiving assistance as a primary residence;

·         The homeowner must be sixty years of age or older; and

·         The homeowner has a household income that does not exceed one hundred percent of the area median income.

The city has completed more than 230 rehabilitation projects to support residential housing in just over a decade. This grant is being administered and managed by the city’s Department of Planning and Building.
