Department of Public Works Update on Rock Salt Supply as of 02-21-2025 3:27pm
We want to provide an update regarding the recent speculation and challenges with our rock salt supply. We had an order scheduled to arrive on February 12th, but when it did not come as expected, we contacted the supplier, who assured us it would be delivered by Friday, February 14th.
At the time, we still had some salt stored in the shed, but as many of you experienced, the storm brought significant ice accumulation, and our salt shed has limited storage. We quickly depleted our remaining supply over the holiday weekend. We actively reached out to other suppliers in an effort to replenish stock, but due to the widespread impact of the storm, salt shortages were reported across the entire capitol region.
Fortunately, we have now received our delayed shipment, and the Common Council has approved an additional $25,000 as our budgeted allegation was getting low. This would ensure we are better prepared in case weather icing conditions continue. Let me ensure the public that our expected rock salt delivery during this period was not delayed due to a lack available funds.
This winter has been particularly unpredictable for our region, and while we do our best to anticipate and prepare and budget for weather-related challenges, some circumstances remain beyond our control. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we work to keep our roads safe.

Like many communities in the area, the City is currently running low on rock salt and is awaiting our next delivery. This shortage is affecting many cities across the county, and we are prioritizing salt use on hills and high-risk areas until our supplies are replenished.We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and urge everyone to exercise extra caution while walking and driving on the streets.
